Stop Junk Mail! | Document Archive back to Campaigns Campaigning for Environmental Justice |
Throughout 2003, the main campaign for Friends of the Earth Edinburgh was our waste campaign. We have been successfully in contributing to the decision of Edinburgh City Council to expand curbside recycling and also in the rejection of mass burn incineration in the Lothian and Borders Area Waste Plan. The Waste Campaign is ongoing and we are currently looking into issues such as the availability of recycled newsprint for use in printing newsletters and the recycling habits of pubs, clubs, and bars. If you would like to get involved, please contact us by clicking on the “Contact Us” tab above.
Free service to significantly reduce junk mail!
‘Junk’ mail is a real problem. It is the unsolicited post from ‘Direct Mail Advertisers’ that you never asked for but comes through your letter box with increasing frequency. The Advertisers usually get your address when you open a bank account, sign up for a mortagage, or fill out some other form and forget to tick the ‘don’ pass on my address’ box that is hidden at the bottom of the page.
For the UK as a whole, the amount of junk mail sent to consumers doubled during the 1990s to 3.3 billion items in 1999. Current estimates (again for the UK) are that only 13% of this is recycled! However, the Mailing Preference Service (MPS) can put an end to most of this mail for you. If you aren’t already receiving junk mail, signing up with the MPS will prevent you from receiving it in the future. Signing up for the MPS is free! Why not do it now, either online at MPS-Online.org.uk, or with our simple form. Not only will you cut down on unwanted junk mail, but you will help the environment significantly by both reducing the amount of paper produced and the amount that goes into landfills. The first page of the form is a short overview of the MPS as well as their contact information (the MPS is not affiliated with Friends of the Earth). The second page is the form — simply fill in your address and send it to the included FREEpost address. Download the form. Although Friends of the Earth is not affiliated with the MPS, this form has been approved by the MPS for registering with their service. |
